Personal trainers who work independently (outside gyms) earn 2–5x more than gym-employed trainers. Working in client homes, parks, or online eliminates overhead and doubles your take-home per session.
Certification Requirements
NASM CPT: $599–$899, most recognized by clients. ACE CPT: $449–$699, second most recognized. ACSM: $279–$349, preferred by medical/clinical settings. CPR/AED certification: $30–$60, required by all. Total to start: $350–$1,000.
Online vs. In-Person Training
In-person: $50–$100/session, 1 client at a time, highest service quality. Online coaching: $150–$500/month per client, can serve 20–50 clients simultaneously, geographic freedom. Hybrid (check-ins + online programming): $200–$400/month per client, best scalability while maintaining relationships.
